In a heartwarming testament to conservation efforts, Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) celebrates the hatching of approximately 300 Hawksbill turtles at its Al Taweelah beach this season. Since the monitoring programme began in 2011, EGA’s beach has seen around 7,500 successful hatchings, underscoring the company’s commitment to preserving the UAE’s rich biodiversity.

The critically endangered Hawksbill turtles, the only sea turtles that nest in the UAE, have found a safe haven thanks to EGA’s dedicated Sustainability team. This year alone, the team protected and monitored 116 nests, ensuring the survival of these incredible creatures amidst the challenges posed by predators and marine debris. The company’s proactive approach extends beyond monitoring; in January, EGA organized a beach clean-up, where volunteers removed over 1,300 kilograms of waste, creating a pristine environment for the turtles.

Abdulnasser bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA, expressed the company’s pride in contributing to the conservation of these magnificent turtles, stating, “EGA is committed to operating responsibly, including by protecting wildlife near our operations. We are proud to play a role in the conservation of these magnificent creatures, which are part of the UAE’s natural heritage and biodiversity. Our team works hard to ensure that our beach is a safe and welcoming habitat for the turtles, and we are delighted to see another successful hatching season.”

This season, four injured turtles were rescued and are currently receiving expert care at the Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Centre at Burj Al Arab. With an average lifespan of 30 to 50 years, and females capable of laying up to 150 eggs per season, these hatchlings symbolize hope for the future of their species and the ongoing efforts to safeguard the UAE’s natural treasures.
