Long before Sharjah’s skyline became synonymous with international cricket, a quiet fascination was taking root in the life of a young Abdulrahman Bukhatir. Raised in a traditional Sharjah family during a period of national transformation, Bukhatir grew up witnessing the UAE evolve from modest beginnings into a land shaped by ambition and possibility. Those formative years planted a belief that progress was built by people willing to think ahead.
That belief found its spark thousands of miles away in Karachi, Pakistan, where Bukhatir attended BVS Parsi High School. Introduced to cricket by neighbours, he quickly understood the sport’s power beyond the field. Cricket was not just competition, it was culture, conversation, and community. Packed streets, shared excitement, and collective pride left a lasting impression, one that would quietly guide his future decisions.
Bukhatir’s early professional years were grounded in discipline and enterprise. After working with the British Bank in the UAE, he moved into trading essential commodities like cement and steel, sectors that played a critical role in the country’s rapid development. These experiences sharpened his business instincts and expanded his network, eventually leading to the founding of the Bukhatir Group. Today, the group spans construction, real estate, education, IT, and sports and leisure, reflecting a portfolio built on foresight rather than chance.
Yet cricket never drifted far from his mind. As his business acumen matured, so did his vision for Sharjah. Bukhatir saw an opportunity to position the UAE as neutral ground for international cricket at a time when the sport needed stability and space to grow. By the early 1980s, that vision materialized with the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, ready to host the world by 1981.
Between 1984 and 2010, over 200 One Day Internationals were staged at the venue, earning recognition from Guinness World Records. More importantly, the stadium became a meeting point where sport intersected with diplomacy and commerce. Foreign ministers, ambassadors, business leaders, celebrities, and fans from the subcontinent filled the stands, turning matches into moments of cultural connection.
