December in Abu Dhabi often means making the most of the cooler weather, whether that involves an outdoor family afternoon, a walk by the waterfront or a weekend activity with the children. This year, those plans can come with a little extra purpose. The Abu Dhabi Festival of Health returns with free experiences that make learning about wellbeing feel more like a day out than a lesson.
Organised by the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) with the Department of Health Abu Dhabi, the festival will run at Hudayriyat Island from 11 to 15 December, before moving to Al Jahili Park in Al Ain from 24 to 28 December. Entry is free. Families can explore workshops, cooking demonstrations, fitness sessions, mindfulness activities and interactive challenges without needing to commit to a formal health programme.
A healthy routine rarely comes down to one big lifestyle change. It is usually shaped by smaller decisions, choosing a more balanced lunch, fitting in a walk, getting enough sleep or finding time to switch off after a busy day. The festival brings these everyday habits into four focus areas: movement, nutrition, sleep and mental wellbeing.

For parents, the appeal is having activities that children, adults and grandparents can enjoy together. A cooking demonstration can make nutritious food more approachable, while a fitness session gives families a reason to get moving. Mindfulness activities offer a different pace. There is room for different ages and abilities, including People of Determination.
The event also builds on a strong response to its first edition. Abu Dhabi’s wider Healthy Living programme reported that the inaugural Festival of Health attracted almost 50,000 participants and more than 40,000 repeat visits, with children accounting for 37 per cent of visits. That level of return engagement suggests the format gave families reasons to come back, rather than simply make a one-time appearance.
There is a wider idea behind the December programme, too. Abu Dhabi is placing greater emphasis on preventive health, encouraging people to build habits before health concerns arise. The festival brings that approach into everyday settings, using practical guidance and shared experiences instead of relying on information alone.
Its timing during the UAE’s Year of the Family gives the event another layer of relevance. Children can discover new activities alongside parents and grandparents, while families get an opportunity to talk about food, movement and rest in a relaxed setting. Those conversations can continue long after the visit.
Whether the plan is an afternoon at Hudayriyat Island or a festive-season outing to Al Jahili Park, the Festival of Health offers a free way to spend time together while picking up useful ideas. Explore the December dates and make room for a healthier kind of family day out.
